Tabor City, NC--
Pendleton Place, Tabor City’s
showplace and home to Joe Garrell and Kathy Foxworth, was the site for a recent
Garden Reception honoring Garrell’s brother, Jimmy Woodward Garrell, a Tabor
City native and 31st Honorary Chairman of the 2008 Southeastern
Community College Foundation Dinner Theatre.
Garrell was greeted by
hundreds of friends and well-wishers who relaxed on acres of well-manicured
grounds and were treated to a “special appearance and vocal performance” by
Rhett Butler and Scarlett O’Hara, accompanied by a string ensemble from the
College.
“I am extremely proud
of my big brother, Jimmy,” said Joe Garrell. “I know what he is made of, what
he as been through and what he has done for other people. Jimmy has stood by
how things CAN and SHOULD BE done with projects such as the Garrell-Yam City
Time Saver Scholarship. Jimmy truly knows the importance of education and shows
his support through not only monetary gifts, but also the precious gift of time.
The reception is one small way that I can pay tribute to him.”
The elder Garrell has
been an Active Director to Southeastern Community College since 1994. In
addition, he was a charter member of the Foundation Investment Committee, and
was a Governor’s appointee to the SCC Board of Trustees from 1995-1999.
He is affiliated with
many organizations including the N.C. Baptist Foundation Endowment, the Norman
Vincent Peale Fellowship Foundation/Guidepost Magazine, and Child Evangelism
Fellowship.
Jimmy Garrell whose
Tabor City businesses include Yam City Oil and Gas Company and the Cash &
Dash/Time Saver Convenience Stores, along with brother Joe, President of Myrtle
Beach’s premier Real Estate Company, LITUS* Properties, and Managing Member of
LandBank, an Horry County land holding company which purchased over 43% of
Carolina Forest as well as other large land tracts, are recognized as two of the
Carolinas best known and most respected businessmen.
Both were recognized
last year by the Senate of the North Carolina General Assembly for their
distinguished service to the citizens of North Carolina. This proclamation was
presented to them by their cousin, Senator R.C. Soler, Jr., the longest serving
member of the North Carolina General Assembly in the history of the State of
North Carolina.
Their roots in Tabor
City run deep and their belief in education is strong. Mother, Doris, was a
founder of Southeastern Community College, and the Alton Garrell Entrepreneurial
Scholarship, named in honor of their father, annually benefits a South Columbus
student.
